Reagan tells Memphis OK

Hopes to kick against Tennessee on Sept. 30

Matt Reagan can't wait for Sept. 30.

It's not his birthday or anything like that.

Sept. 30 is the Saturday when the University of Tennessee and the University of Memphis will square off and play a little college football.

And Reagan, a senior kicker from Bearden, will likely be playing in that game — as a Memphis Tiger.

After visiting Memphis' campus over the weekend, Reagan committed to coach Tommy West, who's led the Tigers to three consecutive bowl games, winning two.

"I wasn't sure if I was going to go to Memphis," Reagan said. "I went there this past weekend, and I liked what I saw. That's when I decided that Memphis was the place for me."

This past season, Reagan averaged 40.1 yards per punt, made 22 of 23 extra points and kicked 80 percent of his kickoffs into the end zone, but schools weren't hounding Reagan for his services.

"I waited a while before I got any offers," he said. "Then I got three in a hurry."

Those three: Memphis, Louisville and Delaware State.

"I was really tinkering between Louisville and Memphis," he said. "And when they (Louisville) called me Saturday and pulled their offer, it was clear to me I was supposed to be at Memphis."

At Memphis, Reagan will work under special-teams coach Tyson Helton, who coached Memphis All-American kicker Stephen Gostkowski. Gostkowski was a Lou Groza Award finalist in 2004 when he made 83 percent of his field-goal attempts.

"I'd seen what their last kicker did," Reagan said of Gostkowski. "And coach Helton said he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn when he first got there."

Reagan said he'll likely kick field goals, extra points and kick off next season as a freshman. Then as a sophomore, he'll challenge for the punting job.

Reagan also said he plans on arriving in July to get accustomed to the college life and to begin working with the snapper and holder to establish timing.
