LSU coach unhappy with Vols' antics
And while the Tigers' fans loved it -- laughing, cheering, booing and chanting -- LSU coach John Brady didn't like it.
With just over a minute remaining, the Tigers' fans were chanting for Bradshaw to return to the game.
Pearl obliged, and went so far as to raise Bradshaw's hand at the scorer's table.
Pearl said after the game he was just trying to have some fun with the student section because they had provided a great SEC environment.
According to the Tennessean newspaper, that led Brady to make an off-handed remark prior to doing his radio show.
"Tell their coach to show some class,'' Brady was quoted saying. "What's he doing holding up Bradshaw's hand to the student section? Show a little class. Act like you've been there."
Pearl said he was "disappointed'' by the published remarks, and as a matter of procedure, he would forward the matter to UT athletic director Mike Hamilton.
"The comments were not appropriate,'' Pearl said. "Nor were they an accurate reflection of anything that took place.''
Brady told the New Orleans Times Picayune on Sunday that his comments were not meant for the media. The Tennessean's press row seat was located next to Brady's radio show.
"I don't know how to comment on things I said in a private conversation,'' Brady said. "I didn't do an interview with the writer. I'm not sure what he heard me say.
"I like Bruce Pearl. I think he's done a great job with his team. They are the surprise team in the SEC.''
Brady said he would address his comments during the next SEC teleconference this week.
The incident came after the Tigers' fans had jeered Bradshaw throughout the game, and then letting him have it with "air ball'' chants after Bradshaw missed badly on a 3-point attempt.
Bradshaw responded on his next trip down the floor by drilling an NBA-range 3-pointer before giving a lengthy look into the crowd, drawing another loud reaction.
Ironically, fan apathy has been a problem for the talented Tigers this season. The 7,753 paid attendance at the Maravich Center for the UT game was LSU's largest this season despite the Tigers having a 10-game home win streak in SEC play that dates back to the 2003-2004 season.
