Last year, Maryville High School coach George Quarles was talking shop with South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier. On Wednesday, Alcoa's John Reid spent a good part of his day with Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, the winningest coach in major college football history.
Bowden spent nearly an hour with Reid and some of the Tornadoes in the weight room, and the conversation wasn't limited to football.
"Weight training, football, Smokey Mountains, a little of everything," Reid said. "He's an easy guy to talk to."
Like Spurrier, though, Bowden was in town to woo a local player. Spurrier landed Rebels quarterback Cade Thompson, who backed off his original commitment to North Carolina last January.
Bowden is hoping that defensive end/tight end Brandon Warren, who committed to the Seminoles before his senior season, doesn't follow suit.
The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Warren will make an official visit to FSU this weekend. The following weekend, Warren will join Alcoa teammate Dustin Lindsey at Tennessee for his final official visit.
Lindsey has already committed to the Vols. Warren has said he is still committed to Florida State, but that he is strongly considering Tennessee.
"It's down to those two schools," Reid said. "It's up to him now. We've given him as much guidance as we can give."
