Stephens commits to Vols

Texas QB picks UT over Michigan, feels 'more comfortable'

Nick Stephens traded red, white and blue for orange and white.

The quarterback from Flower Mound (Texas) High School told Tennessee football coaches that he will be on his way to Knoxville next year.

Stephens, who is 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, was formerly committed to Ole Miss before communications broke down with the Rebels.

Stephens told the News Sentinel on Jan. 15 that he had not spoken to Ole Miss since they replaced offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone with former Miami coach Dan Werner.

The Rebels did, however, pick up another quarterback commitment. Former Vol Brent Schaeffer announced last week he would return to the SEC. The athletic scrambler from Deerfield Beach, Fla., spent last season playing for College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif., after leaving UT last spring.

Stephens had become a hot commodity lately when he showed he was willing to withdraw his commitment to Ole Miss. Stephens was considering Michigan, along with the Rebels and Vols.

"There were a lot of things that were similar between Tennessee and Michigan," Stephens, who passed for 2,603 yards and 24 touchdowns this past season, told the Dallas Morning News. "So I just decided to go where I felt more comfortable."

Stephens is UT's 20th commitment of the 2006 class. UT is expected to sign approximately 25 prospects. National Signing Day is Feb. 1.

Logan-El Announcement: Antonio Logan-El is set to announce his decision at approximately 4:30 p.m. from the ESPN Zone in Baltimore, Md. The announcement is to be telecast on ESPNews.

Logan-El is considering Maryland, where he originally committed in December, UT, Florida and Penn State. Most think the Forestville (Md.) High School star will stay close to home and choose Maryland or Penn State.

Logan-El, who is 6-4 and 300 pounds, is widely considered one of the top offensive linemen in the nation.
