The Alcoa High School tight end/defensive end will make his college choice official tonight on television during the Locker Room Signing Day 2006 (UPN, 10 p.m.).
Warren committed to Florida State last summer. In the last few weeks, many close to the 6-foot-2, 235-pounder have said that he will sign with Tennessee. Sources close to his recruitment, however, said Warren is still undecided but is leaning towards picking the Vols.
Warren took his official visit to UT over the weekend. There was plenty of time for UT's coaches to shower him with attention since he was one of only three official visitors.
Brandon Heath, the 6-foot, 185-pound safety from Palm Beach Lakes (Fla.) High School, failed to make his official visit. Homewood (Ala.) High wide receiver Tim Hawthorne was the only other undecided prospect to visit.
Warren's teammate, linebacker/running back Dustin Lindsey also took his official visit. Lindsey committed to UT last March.
Warren's tug-of-war has drawn comparisons to the much-publicized recruitment of Patrick Turner, the wide receiver from Goodpasture High in Nashville. Turner spurned the Vols for Southern Cal a year ago.
In both cases, there was strong family pressure to stay close to home. Many close to Turner's recruitment predicted he would end up in Knoxville.
UT's offensive coaches, especially new coordinator David Cutcliffe, spent much of the weekend with Warren trying to convince him not to follow the same path.
National Signing Day is Wednesday.
If Warren does head south to Tallahassee, then Michael Goggans could see UT as a more viable option. The 6-1, 245-pound defensive end/tight end from Benjamin Russell High in Alexander City, Ala., committed to UT in September but has made visits to Alabama and Auburn.
Warren and Goggans are similar athletes that could end up playing the same position.
Crossed Off: Take Jeremiha Hunter off UT's recruiting board. The linebacker announced he was committed to Iowa on Saturday night.
The 6-2, 220-pounder was one of the toughest prospects to read over the past two months, because he took no phone calls from news organizations.
SEC-bound: Hawthorne is still considering UT and like Warren there are strong family pressure to stay in Alabama and play for the Crimson Tide or Auburn. Georgia, however, may be the team to watch and UT's toughest opponent.
