Ramone Johnson slowed by Clearinghouse

Ramone Johnson planned to move into the University of Tennessee's dorms Wednesday along with the majority of his fellow football signees from the class of 2006.

It never happened.

"I was supposed to come down but I haven't been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse," the 6-foot-4, 305-pound offensive lineman from Morgan Park High School in Chicago said Wednesday. "I have all my grades. I did it (registered) on the Internet. I guess it didn't go through."

Johnson, who signed with UT in February, was first made aware of the delay on Monday when UT offensive line coach Greg Adkins called with the bad news.

"At first, I was mad because I was really excited to go to work," Johnson said. "I couldn't really do anything about it so I'll just wait."

Johnson said he expects to move to Knoxville by the end of the week and enroll in classes at UT by Monday. That, however, could depend on the timing of the NCAA Clearinghouse.

"I'm excited about coming down," Johnson said.

Justin Garrett from Pasadena (Calif.) City College said he plans to enroll at UT on Aug. 4 in time for the fall semester. Garrett, who is originally from Baton Rouge, La., said he is close to being academically eligible.

"It's hard work, real hard work," the 6-2, 200-pound safety said. "I've just got an English (class) and a math to finish, then I'll be straight."

Gerald Williams said he plans to leave for Knoxville today. However, the 6-4, 225-pounder from Boyd Anderson High in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., is still awaiting a final ruling from the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Williams enrolled at UT last summer. The linebacker/ defensive lineman practiced with the Vols before being sent home. He signed again with UT in February.

"I haven't gotten the final word," Williams said, "but it should be cleared up within a couple of days."

Questions about Williams' eligibility arose from one of three correspondence classes taken at the now defunct University High in Florida. Williams was awaiting final approval on the class while working to improve his test score on the ACT.

Williams said he improved his ACT score from a previous 18 and 19 to a 23. Williams' eventual improvement on the college entrance exam is thought to supersede the grade from University High.

"They have a lock on it," Williams said. "They're just waiting for the head man to take it off."

Running back/linebacker Dustin Lindsey of Alcoa will attend Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College and Brent Vinson from Phoebus High in Hampton, Va., will attend Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., in order to become academically eligible to attend UT.

Lindsey planned on enrolling at Hargrave before academic shortcomings on his grade point average and college entrance exam forced him to a junior college, where he will have to spend three semesters, as per SEC rules.

Had Lindsey been accepted to Hargrave, he could have had five years to play four seasons at UT. Instead, he will return to Knoxville with three seasons of eligibility remaining because he enrolled at a junior college.

Stephaun Raines will also be a second session no-show. The 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback/wide receiver from Dalton (Ga.) High planned on moving to Knoxville this week but a recent grade has that move on hold.

Raines said he has disputed the unfavorable grade he received during the spring semester of his senior year.

Raines said that he plans to enroll in time for the fall semester.

Linebacker Dorian Davis from Iowa City (Iowa) High, defensive lineman Blake Garrettson from Morristown East, wide receiver Quintin Hancock from St. Augustine (Florida) High, kicker Daniel Lincoln from Forest High in Ocala, Fla., lineman Darius Myers from Cordova High via Hargrave, defensive end Chase Nelson from Union High in Tulsa, Okla., offensive lineman Cody Pope from Cathedral Catholic High in San Diego, lineman Jarrod Shaw from Northside High in Lafayette, La., quarterback Nick Stephens from Flower Mound (Texas) High, defensive end Victor Thomas from Olive Branch (Miss.) High and running back/linebacker LaMarcus Thompson from Redan High in Stone Mountain, Ga., all moved into UT's dorms on Wednesday.

Tight end/defensive end Lee Smith from Powell, offensive lineman Jacques McClendon from Cleveland, Tenn., and tight end Luke Stocker from Madison High in South Berea, Ky., enrolled in June for the first session of summer school.

The Vols are also expecting the return of J.T. Mapu, a defensive lineman who has completed a two-year Mormon mission.

Defensive end Walter Fisher from Coffeyville Community College enrolled at UT in January and participated in spring practice. Kicker Chad Cunningham from Dawson High in Dawsonville, Ga. will enroll in January as a part of UT's 2007 class.
