SEC also may check on Smith
UT recruit still waits on clearinghouse
Smith, a point guard from Detroit who re-took a standardized test in June, is hoping to enroll at UT this term, which started Monday.
The SEC office could be involved in the review of Smith's academic records because of newly enacted legislation designed to review transcripts as they relate to NCAA qualification standards.
Smith's case could be getting the review because he attended more than one high school, and that's one of the stipulations under the new legislation that requires the SEC to get involved.
If Smith's qualifications are approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse and the SEC Office, UT's admissions office would still need to approve his admittance. If Smith doesn't enroll in the second term of summer school, he could still enroll in fall classes, which begin Aug. 23.
UT signees Duke Crews and Josh Tabb began classes Monday.
UT is expected to issue a release on the status of suspended redshirt sophomore Tony Passley today. As of last week, Passley had complied with coach Bruce Pearl's requirements for reinstatement.
On the road: Pearl and his staff are in the midst of their NCAA-allotted 20 days of recruiting evaluations.
"I'll be on the road 18 or 19 of the 20 possible days,'' Pearl said. "Three of the four coaches can be out at one time, with one back in the office.''
In addition to Pearl, associate head coach Tony Jones and assistants Jason Shay and Steve Forbes will travel to assess prospects.
Pearl's camp evaluations include the ABCD Reebok camp in New Jersey, the adidas Camp in Atlanta and the Nike All-American camp and Hoosier Shootout in Indianapolis.
Other camps the UT assistants are attending include the 16-under-nationals in Little Rock, Ark., the AAU Kentucky Hoop Festival, the Breakdown Hoop Festival in Miami and the AAU nationals in Las Vegas.
Counselors: UT players Major Wingate and Chris Lofton have worked out and been counselors at the adidas Camp in Atlanta. Players from other schools with contracts with adidas, such as UCLA, Notre Dame, Arkansas and North Carolina State, also had players attend the camp as counselors.
Worth Noting: All UT signees are on the updated men's basketball roster on the Vols' athletic web site. Smith and Wayne Chism have been assigned their numbers (12 and 4, respectively). Passley has been assigned the No. 13. Signees Crews, Tabb and Marques Johnson have yet to be assigned numbers.
