Ash leaving Vols after brief return
Offensive tackle decides to transfer
"Ell will not return to school and has decided to transfer," UT coach Phillip Fulmer said Wednesday night.
Fulmer couldn't go into specifics citing privacy issues for Ash.
The 6-foot-5, 293-pound offensive tackle from Willingboro, N.J., was dismissed from the team as a redshirt freshman last November after a profanity-laced outburst on the practice field prior to the Vanderbilt game.
UT athletic director Mike Hamilton was present at the Haslam Field facility and witnessed the event.
Ash continued to compete in the shot put and discus for the UT track team.
During spring drills, Fulmer announced he was giving Ash a "second chance" at defensive tackle, but without scholarship privileges.
Fulmer said he didn't know where Ash planned to transfer.
Graduate Scholars: Two popular former Vols have returned to school and have been named recipients of scholarships toward completion of their graduate degrees.
Jake Finlayson, a former tight end, will receive the $9,000 Gary Frank Wallace Scholarship to continue his studies in engineering.
Will Overstreet, a former defensive end, will receive the $4,000 Gus and Margaret Manning Scholarship towards his graduate business degree.
Each was a three-year starter from 1999-2001.
Honor Roll: Fifty UT athletes have been named to the 2005-06 SEC Freshman Honor Roll for academic achievements this past year.
Football honorees were Jeff Cottam, Raymond Henderson, Ricardo Kemp, Andre Mathis, Josh McNeil, Adam Myers-White and Austin Rogers. Raymond Henderson also made the list but has since transferred to Minnesota after being dismissed for what was described as an inappropriate comment to a woman and her daughter.
Students were required to achieve at least a 3.0 grade-point average and complete 24 semester hours.
