Former Vols trying to land roster spots

Ron Slay and Scooter McFadgon have wrapped up NBA summer-league action in Las Vegas just as C.J. Watson is getting started in Salt Lake City.

A number of ex-Tennessee players are trying to land spots on NBA rosters for 2006-07, but the competition is tough and the odds are long.

Slay, the 2003 SEC player of the year, averaged 10.8 minutes and 6.2 points with Denver’s team in the Vegas Summer League. Slay played in Italy last year then signed in April with Huelva in Spain.

McFadgon, who played for the Harlem Globetrotters in his first year out of college, averaged 12 minutes and 6.2 points for the Washington Wizards in Vegas.

Point guard Watson, fresh out of UT, signed with San Antonio’s team for the Rocky Mountain Review in Salt Lake City. The Spurs’ roster includes starter Tony Parker, backup Beno Udrih and the club signed free-agent Jacque Vaughn from New Jersey earlier this week.

Vincent Yarbrough was on Minnesota’s roster in the Vegas League but did not participate due to a foot injury. He played in Italy last season.

Free-agent hopeful Isiah Victor was waived by Washington before the Vegas League opened. He averaged 18.8 points per game for Roanoke in the NBA’s developmental league last season.
