HomeFootball Recruiting

Davis, Paige have plenty in common

Luther Davis and Ahmad Paige are traveling down the recruiting trail together.

The two Louisiana prospects, who attend different high schools less than half an hour apart, didn’t meet until a camp at LSU in February. Now the two are best friends.

Davis, a 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end from West Monroe High School, and Paige, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound wide receiver from Sterlington High School, talk every day about their respective lists of schools.

Paige said he is considering Tennessee, LSU, Florida State, Florida, Miami and Southern Cal. Davis has a broader list but said he’s considering the same schools as Paige, along with Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State.

The two plan to announce their college decision on ESPN on Aug. 19.

Paige said he and Davis seesaw back and forth on their college selections each day. Paige estimated there is a 60-percent chance they attend the same school.

"It seems like we mix and match," he said. "Neither one of us has our mind set on the school that we’re going to. I could probably call Luther and he’ll tell me one school today and then I’ll talk to him the next day and he’ll be like, ‘I like this school too man.’

"It’s kind of weird but I think when it boils down to it we will be at the same school."

Davis is even more optimistic than Paige that they’ll end up together, saying the probability is "close to 100-percent."

Davis said his friendship with Paige has helped him deal with the pressure and attention of the recruiting process.

"Having someone who knows exactly what you’re going through is kind of helpful," Davis said. "Whenever I’m stressed about it I have someone to call to talk about it."

Paige said he plans to visit Florida on July 21 and UT the next weekend on July 28. Davis said he will travel to UT with Paige but might visit LSU or USC instead of Florida.

UT wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor is in charge of recruiting Paige and Davis. The three have become very close.

"I probably talk to coach Troop as much as I do Ahmad," Davis said. "Troop is probably the coolest coach I’ve met along this whole recruiting deal."

Paige and Davis aren’t considering a school less than four hours away. Whichever school the two choose will essentially become their new home.

Paige said Taylor has made him feel like he’ll be part of a new family at UT.

"I don’t think there are too many coaches out there like him," Paige said. "He’s told me numerous times before, ‘If you come to Knoxville I’m going to take care of you.’ I really believe that."

The prospects are announcing their commitment in August, but their recruitment will be far from over. Both plan to take all five official visits this fall.

Paige said he will take official visits to LSU and Florida State and will decide on the other three visits by August.

Paige admitted it will be difficult to stay committed to the school he announces next month.

"I’ve thought about that 30 times," he said. "It’s going to be very hard because with these official visits the schools pull out all the stops. It’s going to be hard to stay true to our commitment when we go to another school and they wine and dine you."

Whether Paige and Davis end up at the same school will remain to be seen until National Signing Day on Feb. 7. Paige said no matter where they go the friendship will stay together.

"You’ve got to be selfish with this process," he said. "You’re the one that has to go and live there for five years. You’ve got to make a life out of yourself there.

"It’s going to be disappointing in one sense but he’s got to do what’s best for him. We’ll always be friends."
