Miami Central quarterback not scared off by competition

Travaris Cadet isn’t running away from competition.

"You can’t survive if you do," the athletic quarterback from Miami (Fla.) Central High School said.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Cadet said he is considering Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Florida, Georgia Tech and Miami. He said UT, Virginia Tech and Florida stand out.

UT received a commitment from McCallie quarterback B.J. Coleman last month. Cadet said Coleman’s commitment has not lessened his interest in the Vols.

"I’m not afraid of competition," he said. "I come from Miami and there’s nothing but competition down here. There’s nothing to run away from."

Cadet said he began watching UT during the 2004 season when the Vols had freshman quarterback Brent Schaeffer. Cadet, who has been compared to Schaeffer, said he liked how UT took advantage of a mobile quarterback.

"They switched the system to his tendencies just a little bit," Cadet said. "I like that they had a complete quarterback system."

Cadet said he’s researched offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe’s successful history coaching mobile quarterbacks. He pointed to 1998, when UT’s national championship team was quarterbacked by Tee Martin.

"He (Cutcliffe) said he liked having a mobile quarterback," Cadet said. "If something went wrong they could make something out of it."

Cadet is being recruited by wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor, and likes what he hears.

"He sounds like a confident guy," Cadet said. "He’s somebody who won’t let you down. He has a good attitude."

Cadet said he likes Virginia Tech for many of the same reasons he likes UT, including the school’s success with scrambling quarterbacks.

"Virginia Tech had Mike Vick and his brother (Marcus Vick)," he said. "The system already was based on scrambling ability. I’ve been watching Va Tech for a long time."

Cadet said he plans to show off similar skills in college to what Michael Vick displayed during his time as a Hokie.

"He made people look stupid," Cadet said.

Cadet said he’s grown up a fan of Florida. He said Urban Meyer’s spread offense would allow him to make plays similar to those made by former Texas quarterback Vince Young.

"They’ve always had a good team," Cadet said. "They’ve brought in some good weapons and they’ve always been confident."

Cadet said he is open to playing another position in college. Still, he wants his shot at quarterback.

"It’s quarterback first," he said, "but I’m not saying I won’t play another position."
