Three firsts for News Sentinel
Sports editor John Adams was named best columnist and best event writer. Roland Julian won first place for headline writing.
Mike Strange was second in both column writing and event writing. John Adams was second in the sportswriter of the year category, which was won by Ron Higgins of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. The sportswriter of the year award is named after former News Sentinel sports columnist Gary Lundy.
Dave Hooker was second in news writing, and Bob Hodge was second in outdoor writing.
The Commercial Appeal was judged the state's best daily section. The News Sentinel was second, and the Chattanooga Free Press was third.
The Commercial Appeal also won for the best special section. The News Sentinel was third.
