Audio: Assistant principal pranks Lee Smith

A Powell High School assistant principal accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student sent a local radio station to wake up the student in his bedroom with "Rocky Top."

The News Sentinel obtained an audio recording of the segment from WIVK radio in which assistant principal Kim Kallenberg is present as a band wakes up University of Tennessee freshman football player Lee Smith to a band playing the UT and Powell fight song on Nov. 4, 2005.

On the recording, a WIVK host asks Smith’s father, Daryle, why a principal wants to wake up her son.

"She hasn’t been able to do it any other way this year," Daryle Smith says on the recording. "This might be her first opportunity."

Earlier in the recording, the host says, "It’s kind of unusual that the principal of the school wants to wake your son up this morning."

A female voice can be heard laughing as the younger Smith wakes up, however it is unclear from the recording whether Kallenberg was in the room.

Kallenberg was placed on administrative leave July 14 while Knox County Schools investigates allegations she had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student and tampered with several students’ grades.

Lee Smith, 18, denied having any inappropriate or sexual relationship with Kallenberg in a signed affidavit obtained Tuesday by the News Sentinel.

Russ Oaks, spokesman for Knox County Schools, said district officials know about the segment.

"We are aware of it, and if there is a need for that to be considered (in the district’s investigation), it will be," Oaks said.

UT coach Phillip Fulmer met with Daryle Smith on Tuesday and Lee Smith on Wednesday. UT will await the findings of the investigation before taking action.

"Our administration is handling that," Fulmer said Thursday at SEC Media Days in Hoover, Ala., in his first public comments about the situation. "Right now it’s not an issue we need to be concerned about. We’ve got to continue to find out the facts and go from there."
