Sears, Harrell preseason picks

HOOVER, Ala. -- Tennessee football players don't exactly expect respect right now.

They've had it drilled in their heads all spring that respect is earned, and you don't earn it after a 5-6 season in 2005.

So it wasn't a shock when only two Vols were selected first-team preseason All-SEC by media members attending SEC Media days.

Senior offensive tackle Arron Sears and senior defensive tackle Justin Harrell were first-team honorees.

"This year we're going into it as underdogs," Sears said. "We like being underdogs."

Sears garnered the second-most votes of any first-team selection, getting 95 votes on the 104 submitted ballots. Only Ole Miss linebacker Patrick Willis, with 98, garnered more.

Second-team picks from Tennessee included sophomore running back Arian Foster, junior defensive back Jonathan Hefney and senior placekicker James Wilhoit.

Senior cornerback Jonathan Wade rounded out UT's six honorees with a third-team selection.

Auburn, a heavy favorite to win the SEC championship, led the way with 12 total All-SEC candidates.

The Tigers and Georgia each had five first-team picks. Georgia and LSU each had 10 overall selections.

Florida, picked to win the SEC East ahead of second-place Georgia and third-place Tennessee, had eight total players selected along with Arkansas.

Kemp, Hefney Incident: Freshman running back Ricardo Kemp and Hefney were among four people asked to leave the campus T-Rec center Wednesday night, according to a University of Tennessee police incident report.

Kemp admitted he had been hanging on the rim during a pickup basketball game and Hefney didn't have the proper UT student ID.

Kemp cooperated fully with T-Rec supervisor Jessica Pipkin, the report stated.

Hefney had to be asked several times to produce a student ID before admitting he had used another student's ID to get into the center.

"Our kids cooperated fully and it's a non-issue," Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said Friday.

Darrell Ward, who isn't a UT student, was uncooperative and argumentative when asked to leave the T-Rec, according to the report.

The responding UT officer, in his report, said the group complained they are treated differently at the center because of their race.

"Spoke with the subjects involved and they stated they are unfairly targeted when they play basketball there because they are black," the report stated.

Daniels-Mullholland Quitting: Rick Daniels-Mullholland, a former standout at Oak Ridge High School, has decided to leave the Tennessee football team but will remain in school. He was hoping for playing time at tight end.

Daniels-Mullholland, a redshirt freshman, was listed as a 6-foot-4, 250-pound invited walk-on. He turned down a scholarship offer from Furman to attend UT.

LSU's Bad Memories: For LSU players, nothing compared to the heartache and human suffering they witnessed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina a year ago.

But Tennessee's dramatic 30-27 overtime comeback in Death Valley was like piling on at a time of trouble according to LSU free safety LaRon Landry.

"It was very disappointing," Landry said. "We had the whole game. We lost our composure and I got hurt (ankle).

"Our team just really didn't focus on winning the game at the end. We let a lot of little things get to us."

Toe Jam For MSU: Mississippi State quarterback Michael Henig got a few laughs when he described how he suffered a broken toe this past summer.

The Bulldogs' sophomore was running up some steps at a lake house when he cracked his toe on a step.

"It's ironic and just one of those fluke things," Henig said. "I've been running up stairs since I was a little kid and never thought it would happen."

Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom joked Henig might have been limping around campus to milk some sympathy and "find a girlfriend."

"Hey, if it'll get me a girlfriend," Henig said, "I'll take one."
