Rookie Allen officially a holdout
The former University of Tennessee star is seeking a five-year contract, while the Dolphins are firm in wanting to sign the No. 16 overall pick to the maximum six-year term.
In 2005, top pick Ronnie Brown missed the first three weeks of camp in a holdout. Last March, owner Wayne Huizenga said he would insist that none of his team's draft picks miss the beginning of camp.
"There's a business part of this game we're not going to air out publicly," Dolphins coach Nick Saban said. "We're going to focus on the players that are here."
Players selected among the top 16 picks of the draft can be offered up to a six-year deal. Teams want to sign players long-term to avoid the possibility of losing a player to free agency a year early.
Allen's agent Mitchell Frankel said he and the Dolphins have had several discussions in South Florida, but the sides are at a crossroads in the negotiations.
''All we're trying to do is get a reasonable deal,'' Frankel told The Miami Herald. "We've had several meetings in Miami, and we've had several phone conversations."
Moore Waived: Former UT star Eddie Moore's days were numbered when he was traded to the New Orleans Saints in the offseason but returned after failing a physical. The Dolphins waived the former second-round selection Friday.
Moore was about to enter his fourth season with the Dolphins after finishing his previous three on the injured reserve list.
