Adams: Covers get extreme makeover
As usual, they're informative for the media and visually appealing for recruits. But I was disappointed in many of the covers, most of which could have been more timely and creative.
Here's what my covers would have looked like:
- Alabama: A picture of Tide players busting through jail bars with the headline, "Back In Business," a reminder that NCAA probation and losing seasons are in the past.
- Arkansas: A picture of offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who was coaching at Springdale High School last year. He's holding a copy of his book, "Hurry Up No Huddle -- An Offensive Philosophy."
The headline: "High School Is Cool."
- Auburn: A picture of a hand -- coach Tommy Tuberville's will do if a model isn't available -- with the scores of the last four Auburn - Alabama games (all won by Auburn) followed by an upraised thumb.
The headline: "One For The Thumb."
- Florida: Remember when the Gators mistakenly put a crocodile on the cover of their press guide? It's time to try again.
A picture of an alligator, with the headline: "We're Not That Stupid Now."
- Georgia: The Bulldogs almost got it right. They put a small picture of their mascot, Uga VI, at the bottom of the cover.
A cover-size picture of Uga's face would have been better -- and not just for this year's media guide, but for every year. When you've got the best mascot in college football, you show him off.
- Kentucky: A picture of a football as the centerpiece with a small picture of a deflated basketball in the left-hand corner, and the SEC East basketball standings in the right corner: 1, Tennessee; 2, Florida; 3, Kentucky.
The headline: "We're Not A Basketball School Anymore."
- LSU: A picture of former coach Nick Saban, who led the Tigers to the 2003 national championship -- just to make sure second-year coach Les Miles doesn't get complacent after an 11-win season.
- Mississippi State: Half the cover is a picture of Uga. The other half is a picture of Mississippi State Bulldog mascot Bully.
The headline across Bully's face reads: "Almost Famous."
- Ole Miss: Half the cover is a picture Ole Miss fans partying in the Grove before the game. The other half is a picture of opposing fans partying in the Grove after the game.
The headline: "It's Only A Game."
- South Carolina: Nothing but a South Carolina visor. Anyone who knows anything about college football will get it.
- Tennessee: A foldout cover with an orange background and white lettering: "Got Quarterbacks?" Inside the cover: A picture of David Cutcliffe with quarterbacks Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Heath Shuler and Tee Martin. Not pictured: Micheal Spurlock and Ethan Flatt.
- Vanderbilt: A picture of Jay Cutler's game-winning touchdown pass against Tennessee with the headline: "Do You Believe in Miracles?"
Don't lose the picture. It's your cover until the next time the Commodores beat UT, sometime around 2028.
