Carrs dad served in the Air Force until he retired last summer. Carr said his dads career in the military has influenced him to mature quickly.
"It really gave me a lot of discipline and honor and respect that my dad taught me growing up," said Carr, a wide receiver from Huntsville (Ala.) High School. "Its really helped me throughout football. Its given me mental toughness and emotional toughness in my games."
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Carr was a relatively unknown football prospect before his junior season. Because of the moving around, he said college coaches had "no idea" who he was.
Carrs family is originally from Anniston, Ala. Before moving to Huntsville last summer, Carr and his family lived in Great Falls, Mont., for one year and five before that in Ramstein, Germany. For Carr, traveling around the world was the chance of a lifetime.
"It was amazing," he said. "Ive been to places that a lot of people only dream of going like Paris and England. To have that is something I will cherish."
Carrs recruitment picked up after his first season at Huntsville. He said he has scholarship offers from seven schools: Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, Southern Mississippi, Colorado, Marshall and Troy.
Carr said Auburn, Alabama and South Carolina are tied at the top of his list. He said Tennessee has shown interest but hasnt offered a scholarship. He said he is waiting to see what the Vols will do.
"Tennessee is a well-respected school in my book," he said. "I would love to take a visit or accept a scholarship from Tennessee.
"They handle themselves real well throughout many trials and stuff. I like Tennessee."
Carr said a scholarship offer from UT might cause him to reshuffle the order of his list of schools.
"Theyd be ranked at the top," he said, "so itd be a hard decision to make it through all those schools. I dont really know what I would do."
His most-recent offer came last Sunday night from Alabama. Even though the Crimson Tide already had been recruiting Carr, he said the offer caught him off guard.
"It was a team that I always used to watch growing up," he said. "To receive an offer from them is breathtaking. I still really cant believe it."
Carrs head coach at Huntsville, Kevin Wiesman, said he didnt know who Carr was when Carr showed up at the teams first practice last fall. It didnt take long for Wiesman to know Carr was a player.
"He ran about 10 yards and I went to check on his grades real quick," Wiesman said. "He exploded on sight here. He runs so pretty. He does everything well."
Wiesman said Carr has been a special gift, on and off the football field.
"Hes been a blessing," Wiesman said. "Its always a Yes sir, no sir answer. Hes very well raised.
"Hes a gifted athlete and hes not anywhere close to where his potential is."
