Williams believes he’ll be cleared

Gerald Williams is waiting for another appeal.

The defensive lineman from Boyd Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., is planning to enroll at Tennessee on July 6. But, once again, the NCAA Clearinghouse isn’t sure he’s ready academically.

At issue is one grade from three courses he took at University High in Miami, which offered no classes and had no educational accreditation. The NCAA ruled that the class would not count after deciding the correspondent school was considered invalid. However, Williams said he is confident that this latest appeal will clear his way to return to Knoxville.

Williams signed with UT in February 2005 and enrolled for the following fall semester. Williams participated in several practices before he was forced to return home.

Williams said he’s not sure why he’s being singled out. He said he knows of several athletes who earned grades at University High and were approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

"I still graduated from my regular high school," Williams said. "I don’t know why they’d take that (grade) away.

Williams said he also improved his ACT score in order to improve his standing on the NCAA’s sliding scale, which is based on college entrance exams and grade-point average.

Lindsey To Hargrave: As expected, signee Dustin Lindsey must attend a prep school before he can attend UT.

Lindsey, a standout running back at Alcoa High School, will enroll at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., in order to improve his core grade-point average, a source close to Lindsey’s recruitment told the News Sentinel.

Lindsey must spend two semesters at Hargrave before he can attempt to enter UT.

Eye On: Two UT players were named to watch lists for postseason awards presented by the Maxwell Football Club.

Junior quarterback Erik Ainge is on the Maxwell Award Watch List and senior defensive tackle Justin Harrell is on the Bednarik Award Watch List.

The Maxwell Award goes to the nation’s top player. The Bednarik Award is presented to the country’s top defensive player.
