Vols in top 3, Texas QB says

Kinne to make unofficial visit, also interested in Baylor, Florida

G.J. Kinne has faced more than his fair share of trials over the past 14 months.

For the University of Tennessee football prospect, life took a drastic turn on April 7, 2005. Kinne's father, Gary Joe, then the football coach and athletic director at Canton (Texas) High School, was critically wounded when he was shot in the abdomen by a disgruntled parent on April 7, 2005.

Gary Joe Kinne was in and out of the hospital for 120 days before making a complete recovery.

But the heartbreak was far from over. There were the legal proceedings to deal with. Jeff Doyal Robertson was sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting Gary Joe Kinne.

Gary Joe Kinne was named national coach of the year at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January. Then, as he drove home from the trophy presentation, Baylor offered him a job as linebackers coach, which he accepted. Gary Joe Kinne played for Baylor as a middle linebacker.

Now, it's G.J. Kinne who is making headlines. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound quarterback is deciding between Baylor, Florida and Tennessee. He'll participate in UT's camp this weekend.

"I'm wide open right now," said G.J. Kinne during a break from Florida's camp on Wednesday. "As far as Tennessee goes, I love Tennessee. I love Florida. I love Baylor."

The draw to Baylor is natural but G.J. Kinne maintains that it's not a foregone conclusion that he'll end up in Waco, Texas, just because his father is coaching there.

"That's a really good plus," G.J. Kinne said. "I also like the quarterback coach. They're an up-and-coming program. They throw the ball around a lot. But that's not a shoo-in for Baylor. If I were going to commit there, I would have done so a long time ago."

G.J. Kinne said he hopes to make a decision before his senior season begins.

The Baylor connection must have made for some interesting conversations in the Kinne home as the father has also become the recruiter.

"He wants me to come but he's going to let me make my own decision," G.J. Kinne said. "He's going to be 100 percent supportive no matter what I do."

It appears Florida is making a hard push for Kinne.

"I like their offense," Kinne said. "They're really recruiting me hard. They make me feel good. The campus is beautiful and the coaches are awesome."

As for UT, Baylor is again at the core of the decision. UT recruiter Trooper Taylor played with Kinne's father at Baylor.

"The fact that Coach Taylor is there of course," G.J. Kinne said when asked what he likes about UT. "Coach Cut, I know he develops great quarterbacks. Peyton Manning, heck, what's better than that?"

Coach Cut is offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe, who seems intent on recruiting a mobile quarterback for the 2007 class.

"I'm definitely dual threat," G.J. Kinne said. "I rushed for 15 touchdowns last year and 1,500 yards."

G.J. Kinne said he needs 4,000 yards during his senior season to become the all-time leading passer in Texas football history, surpassing Graham Harrell who is expected to start for Texas Tech this season.

G.J. Kinne was named the Class 3A offensive player of the year last season. He was also selected as Mr. Texas Football as a junior over Matthew Stafford, the highly touted quarterback who enrolled at Georgia in January.

G.J. Kinne has moved to Gilmer, Texas, to live with his mother and escape the drama associated with the shooting of his father.

"He shot him point blank and ran off," G.J. Kinne said of Robertson, whose son still attends Canton.

Kinne will attend Gilmer High School his senior year but he'll never forget the day his whole life changed.

"It brought us a lot closer," G.J. Kinne said of his father's shooting. "It also made me do things on my own. It made me a lot more mature. I was basically the head of the household."
