Schaeffer's entry at Ole Miss delayed; he must complete two courses
Schaeffer, who earlier this month told The Commercial Appeal he was headed to Oxford and would be enrolled for the second session which begins July 3, is still trying to complete two online correspondence courses, said his mother, Chandra Schaeffer.
"He'll probably be there by the end of July,'' she said.
Attending summer school is not a requirement for the junior college transfer to be eligible this fall. But he must complete and pass the two correspondence courses in order to be the Rebels starting quarterback when the season begins, which his mother said shouldn't be a problem. Schaeffer had hoped to be in Oxford to participate in summer workouts with his new teammates.
"He knows what he has to do,'' his mother said.
Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron could not be reached for comment, but earlier this month said he is fully confident that Schaeffer will be his quarterback this season.
Schaeffer was Ole Miss' top recruit in a nationally ranked class this year. He began his career at Tennessee and played as a true freshman before a season-ending injury. Following his freshman season, Schaeffer transferred to The College of Sequoias.
Last year, he threw for 2,975 yards with 40 touchdowns and just six interceptions, while also rushing for 854 yards and 12 TDs and broke 11 school records. Schaeffer led the Giants to an 8-3 record. He chose Ole Miss over North Carolina State and Wisconsin.
During Signing Day, Orgeron proclaimed Schaeffer as his starting quarterback, thinking that highly of the player who was one of the top high school quarterbacks in the country before originally signing with Tennessee.
During his freshman season with the Vols, Schaeffer excited fans in the 2004 season opener, completing 7 of 10 passes for 123 yards, and rushing for 29 more on seven carries while splitting time with Erik Ainge. Schaeffer finished the season completing 18 of 37 passes for 302 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also had 66 yards rushing on 33 carries.
