Raines' start delayed; Williams says he's eligible

Lacking test score, Vinson says he'll attend Hargrave for one semester

Stephaun Raines' start at the University of Tennessee is on hold.

The 6-foot, 170-pound wide receiver/cornerback from Dalton (Ga.) High School said he is disputing a high school grade from the spring semester that could prevent him from being academically eligible.

Raines said he had an 86-point average before the final exam.

"I passed the final," Raines said Thursday. "I was pretty comfortable."

Then, Raines said, his average dropped to a 70. Raines said a decision on the matter has been postponed because the teacher is out of town.

Raines planned to enroll July 6, along with the majority of UT's 2006 signing class. That looks very unlikely. Players can also enroll in August for the fall semester. Otherwise, Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., is an option.

"It might be in August," said Raines, who is also waiting on a score from a college entrance exam he took in April. "I know I'm not going to Hargrave."

Knoxville Bound: Defensive lineman Gerald Williams from Boyd Anderson High in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla. said he will enroll at UT next Thursday for the second session of summer school.

"I plan on being there," Williams said. "I just got great news with the test."

Williams said he scored a 23 on the ACT after two previous scores of 18 and 19. Williams said he boosted his score by studying online classes.

"I'm just ready to get there, get started and go to work," he said.

The score clears Williams' path to academic eligibility despite a pending appeal to the NCAA concerning a test taken at University High in Florida, a defunct correspondence school.

The school had been criticized for providing students with grades for minimal work.

"It's still appealed," Williams said, "but for backup I took the test and I got a high-enough score. The test doesn't matter. I qualified anyway."

Williams was enrolled at UT last summer and practiced with the Vols last fall before being sent home by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Williams drew compliments from UT's coaches in his limited practice work.

Hargrave Bound: As expected, Brent Vinson from Phoebus High in Hampton, Va., will enroll at Hargrave in August.

"The problem was my (college entrance exam) test score," said Vinson. "I didn't start playing football until eleventh grade so I didn't know about the SAT and all that stuff."

The 6-2, 180-pound wide receiver said he will enroll at UT in January because his core grade-point average was sufficient.

"I only have to go for a semester," Vinson said. "I'm kind of happy about that."

Vinson said he's not disappointed about the delay. As long as he makes it to Knoxville, he'll make history in the Vinson household.

"I'll be the first person in my family to go to college," Vinson said. "When I get there I'll be ready."
