UT received a commitment from quarterback B.J. Coleman of McCallie High School in Chattanooga last week. Chaisson, a quarterback from Westbrook High School in Beaumont, Texas, said he wasnt surprised by Colemans commitment.
"Whenever they send out different scholarships I know Im not the only guy theyre looking at," Chaisson said. "It really didnt catch me off guard."
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Chaisson said UTs coaches told him they plan to sign only one quarterback in the 2007 signing class.
Thats fine with Chaisson. He said he can play a different position.
"If the quarterback thing doesnt work out I do like receiver and wouldnt mind playing that also," he said. "I played wide receiver as a freshman."
Chaisson said UT is still his leader ahead of LSU, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.
Chaisson said the only recent contact hes had with UTs coaches has been by mail. He said he hasnt expressed to them his willingness to play another position, but he will soon.
"I think I need to pass that on to them," he said. "I dont want them to drop me because Im still very interested in them. I will let them know quarterback is not the only position Im willing to play. I can contribute playing receiver."
Chaisson said he had already considered the possibility of not playing quarterback in college.
"I look at it that Im going to have to compete," he said. "If that doesnt work out I can play another position. Id try out for another position or work hard and see if I can beat him out."
Chaisson said he plans to take official visits to UT, LSU and Oklahoma in the fall. He said he wont make a decision until he takes his official visits.
"Theres no timetable," he said. "It wont be late but I dont think it will be any time soon."
Chaisson is waiting to see if Oklahoma will offer him a scholarship. He attended a camp at Oklahoma on June 6.
Chaisson said he speaks often to quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel but doesnt know how close the Sooners are to offering a scholarship.
"We have a good relationship," Chaisson said. "Weve been contacting each other. Theyve said theyre really interested in me."
Right now, Chaisson said hes focusing on his senior season and academics.
Chaisson said hes taking a class and working with a tutor to prepare for the ACT in September. It will be his first time taking the college entrance exam.
