Suspended Vol basketball players arraigned
Anthony Passley and Jordan Smith appeared this morning before Judge Jimmy Kyle Davis, according to Knox County Assistant District Attorney Samyah Jubran.
Smith, 23, a sophomore walk-on, was represented by attorney Steve Oberman, and Passley, 20, a red-shirt sophomore, was represented by Tommy Hindman, the prosecutor said.
Smith and Passley have an April 18 preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. in General Sessions Court, Jubran said.
The men were arraigned in connection with a March 5 incident. According to a Knoxville Police Department report, officers approached Smith's car after it was found parked blocking the sidewalk under a no parking sign outside a nightclub on Keith Avenue.
After noticing the odor of marijuana, police requested and were granted permission by the players to search Smith's Crown Victoria, according to authorities.
Police uncovered a bag with approximately 15.2 grams of crack cocaine in the driver-side door of Smith's car next to Smith's wallet and UT ID.
A bag containing less than three ounces of marijuana was found in Passley's pocket, which constituted a Class A misdemeanor offense of simple possession/casual exchange. He also is charged with manufacture, delivery, sale or possession of a scheduled II controlled substance, a Class C felony.
Smith is charged with manufacture, delivery, sale or possession of a scheduled II controlled substance, a Class C felony.
Smith and Passley are currently suspended from the basketball team.
