UT athletic trainer Clements resigns to take another job

Tennessee head athletic trainer Keith Clements has resigned.

Clements, who had been affiliated with UT's athletic department since 1997, will pursue a career in medical sales.

"While I never thought that I could leave the prestige of head athletic trainer at the University of Tennessee," Clement said in his resignation letter to UT, "this new opportunity will allow me to utilize my educational background, business management experience, and medical expertise to significantly enhance the 'quality of life' for my family (wife and daughter) and the customers/patients that I serve."

Clements' resignation is effective April 8, after UT's Orange and White spring game.

Clements said the hardest part was telling UT football coach Phillip Fulmer. Despite his concern, Clements said Fulmer was very understanding.

"He's done a great job for us," Fulmer said. "I certainly understand the new demands with a baby at home. He's done a great job. He's been very loyal and hard working and a good friend."

Clements has been UT's head athletic trainer since September 2002 when he replaced Mike Rollo.

At the time of his resignation, Clements, 33, was the youngest person to hold the position of head athletic trainer in the SEC.

"Let it be known that I cannot say enough wonderful things about the University of Tennessee Athletic Department," Clements said.

Jason McVeigh, UT's director of rehabilitation, is a candidate for the interim position of athletic director.
