Light turnout for second of UT's pro timing days

There was a fairly light turnout for Tennessee football's second of two scheduled pro timing days for NFL scouts Wednesday.

One player who might have helped himself was former UT receiver C.J. Fayton.

"C.J. Fayton, he approached this pro timing day just like he did playing for the Tennessee Vols," UT director of player relations Condredge Holloway said in a UT release.

"He's consistent, he works at it and he was better the second pro timing day than he was the first, which is typical of the way C.J. does things. The first pro timing day, he ran 4.66 in the 40; the second, he ran 4.51. Guys like C.J. helped themselves by working out for the scouts both days."

Defensive tackle Tony McDaniel possibly helped his cause with a 4.9 in the 40.

Most of the UT players chose to work out in the first pro day two weeks ago.

  • Ravi Moss, who this year finished his University of Kentucky basketball career, made a surprise tryout for the football team. Moss, a point guard from Hopkinsville, agreed to work out with the team as a wide receiver for a few practices. He could play one year for the team under NCAA eligibility rules.
  • South Carolina star receiver Sidney Rice will miss the rest of spring practice with a broken left thumb. Rice, a sophomore, will need surgery. But Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier says the injury should not keep Rice out of summer workouts.
  • Memphis secondary coach Tim Keane is recovering after having heart surgery this week. Keane, who is about to begin his fifth season with the Tigers, had surgery Tuesday, and officials said afterward it was successful.
