Fulmer dismisses Henderson
UT players comment was inappropriate
As a result, freshman defensive tackle Raymond Henderson was dismissed from the team.
Henderson, who redshirted last season, was dismissed after making "an inappropriate comment to a woman and her adolescent daughter Saturday night at a restaurant," Fulmer said in a statement.
Fulmer didnt specify what the comment was, but emphasized earlier Wednesday that Henderson "improperly represented" his team and university. He was not arrested for the incident.
Henderson declined to comment when contacted by phone on Wednesday.
Fulmer called a team meeting Monday night to address the Henderson situation and the early Monday morning arrest of senior linebacker Marvin Mitchell.
Mitchell, who was charged with disorderly conduct, was indefinitely suspended on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at 3:37 a.m. at the Rocky Top Market on Cumberland Avenue when officers were called to disperse a crowd, according to an incident report from the University of Tennessee Police Department and obtained by the News Sentinel.
Mitchell threatened to "knock out" another customer, was repeatedly asked to leave and verbally abusive to a police officer, according to the document.
As for the 6-foot-6, 255-pound Henderson, this wasnt his first brush with Fulmers doghouse.
He already had been given a curfew as a result of an earlier incident, and Fulmer said he had violated those restrictions on another occasion, but wouldnt expound.
"I did tell him Monday night he was kicked off the football team," Fulmer said. "Then I calmed down a little bit and realized I better check the stories I had heard."
Fulmer continued to investigate the situation Tuesday and announced Wednesday he was sticking with his decision to release Henderson.
"Im just not having any patience with that business right now," Fulmer said. "Im not going to have our guys misrepresent our university."
Henderson, an Oak Creek, Wis., native, played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio in 2005 following his high school senior season.
He was expected to be a backup at defensive tackle this coming season.
Fulmer reiterated how frustrated he is with the "actions of a few" damaging the reputation of UT and his program.
"Its not a situation where things are out of control," he said. "Ninety-five percent of these guys are wonderful, but theres one or two that cant make the right decisions.
"Im sitting here the other night having that meeting and looking at kids like Inky Johnson and Brad Cottam, and all these great wonderful kids, and there I am raising hell with all of them. It doesnt make any sense."
Fulmer repeatedly had discussions with his players before spring practice and during spring practice warning them to "represent the university well on and off the field."
That came after last years string of eight off-field incidents involving arrests or citations between January and July of 2005.
"Were a team," Fulmer said. "You can choose to behave as a winner, and move ahead in life, or you can choose to behave like a loser.
"I want our guys to behave like winners."
After a 5-6 season in 2005 came on the heels of the numerous off-field incidents a year ago, Fulmer admitted he has basically had enough.
"I will not lower my standards," he said in the release. "If anyone else on our team doesnt want to represent our great university and our football program in the proper fashion, they will not be here either.
"The young men on this team and our staff do not want distractions; we had too many of those last year. I am not having any patience with selfish people that dont know how to act."
