Pearl gets another Pearl of a player
Coach's son, Steven, will be UT walk-on
"I gave him two rules: Don't ever be late, and don't ever have me ask you to work harder,'' Bruce Pearl said Saturday. "I'm satisfied he'll be able to do both.''
Steven Pearl averaged 21.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 26 regular season games at West. He shot 49 percent from the field.
Pearl was an All-State and All-PrepXtra selection this season.
"To me, it's a blessing to have my son in my life for four or five more years,'' Pearl said. "Steven has improved a great deal the past couple of years.
"He's good enough to practice for us, and maybe someday, he'll be good enough to play for us.''
Pearl said his son had "several Division II scholarship offers'' as well as some interest from low Division I schools.
"I think his personal recruitment may have been hurt when we moved from Milwaukee,'' Pearl said. "He was being looked at by a bunch of schools in the Midwest. With the relocation, I'm not sure a lot of Southern schools were aware of him.
"I'm just really glad he's going to be with us and get this great education the University of Tennessee offers. It's one more tie my family has to the university.''
Pearl said his 6-foot-5 son likely will play small forward for the Vols.
