Young to interview for UT job today
Georgia Tech assistant in a crowded field
The Vols are replacing Scott Edgar, who left as UTs No. 2 assistant coach last month to take the head-coaching job at Southeast Missouri State.
Young, 34, has been on Paul Hewitts staff for one season. He spent the 2004-05 season as the associate head coach at Chattanooga and spent the 2000-04 seasons at Auburn on former coach Cliff Ellis staff as an assistant.
In 1999-2000, Young coached at Northeastern under Rudy Keeling. Prior to that, he was at Jacksonville working as an assistant for coach Hugh Durham from 1997-99. Young served as an administrative assistant at Auburn from 1994-96.
Young played at Georgia Southern from 1989-93 and was a first-team all-Southern Conference selection as a senior, averaging 17.1 points and 5.1 assists.
Young was the 1992 Trans-America Athletic Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player and was named to the All-TAAC Second-Team as a sophomore and junior, averaging 13.7 and 13.6 points, respectively. As a freshman, he averaged 8.8 points and was an honorable mention All-TAAC selection.
A guard, Young still holds three Georgia Southern records: career assists (530), career 3-pointers (241), and most 3-pointers (93) in a season.
The Miami, Fla., native is at least the sixth candidate Pearl has interviewed for the position. The others are Kent State assistant coach Josh Oppenheimer, former Ole Miss coach Rod Barnes and former Iowa State assistant Damon Archibald, ABA coach/general manager Bob Sundvold and former Texas-San Antonio coach Tim Carter.
