Smith suffered a sprained right ankle earlier this month on the first drill of the first day of Catholic's spring session. The injury occurred when Smith leaped for an interception then came down on a receivers' foot.
"The coaches have already said they know what I can do so they're looking at the rest of the team," said Smith, a 6-foot-2, 205-pounder who could play safety, linebacker or running back in college. "It would have been nice to play. I guess there's some good to just watching.
"It makes me want to play more."
Smith still helped his stock this spring despite the injury. Before being sidelined, he posted a camp-best 3.94 shuttle run at the Nike camp in Athens, Ga. Smith also ran a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash. That time was just .05 seconds short of the fastest time among the camp's 600 participants.
The times definitely caught recruiters' interest.
"There's more and more," Smith said. "It's kind of starting to get hectic. Coaches are asking you to call them more."
UT coach Phillip Fulmer is the only head coach to visit Catholic during the spring evaluation period. Fulmer's timing was a bit unfortunate, as he was present when Smith twisted his ankle.
"There's no ligament damage or anything like that," Smith was quick to point out.
Boston College coach Tom O'Brien is scheduled to visit Catholic next week. Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron was scheduled to visit but the trip was cancelled because of Smith's injury.
Smith said he will visit Stanford on June 1 and Notre Dame later that month. Smith said he is unsure if he will participate in UT's football camp in June.
Catholic's spring practice ended Thursday with a scrimmage against Alcoa.
Frequent Stopover: Alcoa is preparing to roll up the red carpet.
The Tornados' coaches have hosted countless college football recruiters during the spring evaluation period. With only two weeks remaining in the NCAA-designated time frame, the party is coming to a close.
Fulmer was the first VIP to stroll into Alcoa. He did so earlier this month. UT has offered a scholarship to defensive end Rae Sykes and is evaluating wide receiver/cornerback Kyrus Lanxter.
LSU coach Les Miles followed Fulmer last week. Most believe the Tigers and Vols are the teams to beat for the 6-4, 245-pound Sykes.
"He came a long way and spent a long time," Alcoa coach Gary Rankin said of Miles' visit. "They're really after him."
As for Lanxter, he has received strong interest from Louisville, Ole Miss and Stanford.
Rankin, who was hired in April, joked that it would be easier to name the schools that didn't visit Alcoa as opposed to those that did.
Rebel Rousing?: Chris Donald said he will visit Oxford for Ole Miss' camp in June. The Rebels are thought to be the only hurdle for UT as they try to secure the Huntingdon High star.
In April, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker said he was close to committing to UT. Donald said he withheld the pledge because he promised Ole Miss' coaches that he would visit their campus before announcing a decision.
Donald planned to visit Oxford weeks ago but was forced to postpone the trip because of the untimely death of Brandon Snyder, a former teammate and close friend.
Donald visited Knoxville in April. He is considered one of the top two prospects in Tennessee, along with athlete Golden Tate from Pope John Paul II in Hendersonville. Tate has said he is mainly considering Georgia, Notre Dame, Florida, Florida, Florida State and Miami.
