Former Vol QBs among Knoxville Hall of Fame inductees

CORRECTION:

Dewey "Swamp Rat" Warren is originally from Savannah, Ga., not Valdosta, Ga. The error has been fixed in this story.

A pair of Georgia schoolboy quarterbacks turned Tennessee Vols and Knoxville residents top the list for the 2006 Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame.

Bobby Scott and Dewey "Swamp Rat" Warren, originally of Rossville and Savannah, Ga., respectively, are among 10 who will be part of the hall of fame’s 25th induction class on July 28 at the Knoxville Convention Center.

Former UT basketball players Tony White and Bert Bertelkamp, former UT track standout and Olympian Tony Cosey and UT sports information director Bud Ford also will be added to the Hall.

The high-profile Vols will be honored along with Tommy Mozur (tennis), Bill Lauer (swimming), Tina Pugh Sanders (golf) and Ginger Baxter (gymnastics).

Former UT quarterback Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts is the featured speaker at this year’s banquet. Tickets may be obtained by calling 865-544-3825, ext. 221, or visiting www.gkshof.com Proceeds from the banquet go to the Boys & Girls Club of the Tennessee Valley.

Local sports personality Jimmy Hyams, one of the nine members on Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame selection committee, said every class has its more recognizable names. But he said the selection committee has an interest in ensuring all sports at all levels receive recognition.

"It’s not the University of Tennessee Hall of Fame; it’s the Knoxville Hall of Fame, and it includes all counties adjacent to Knox County,’’ said Hyams, a former News Sentinel sportswriter who now hosts an afternoon sports talk radio show.

"Each person on the committee has a different idea what it takes to get on there,’’ Hyams said. "But we all look at people who have made an impact in the community, and we welcome nominations from the public.’’

Bob Polston, who along with Hyams serves on both the selection committee and the board, said this year’s class represents the area well.

"This is a very good class of inductees,’’ Polston said. "We’re putting some people in that should have been in a long time ago. I’ll tell you, we had a lot of quality people to choose from.’’
