Paige to make official visit

Ahmad Paige likes the new-look Tennessee offense.

Paige, a wide receiver from Sterlington (La.) High School, will take an official visit to UT this weekend. The chances of him taking that visit didn't look good before the season began.

Paige, who cancelled numerous unofficial visits to UT last summer, is committed to Florida State, but his recruitment is far from over. He took an official visit to Georgia on Oct. 21, when UT beat the Bulldogs 51-33, and he plans to take all five official visits allotted by the NCAA.

The Vols were never out of the picture in Paige's mind, but he said their turnaround from last year's 5-6 season has them in better standing.

"I never really eliminated them," he said. "I might have lowered them on my list. Just doing as well as they did this year, they've really boosted themselves."

UT assistant coach Trooper Taylor has been responsible for the resurgence of the wide receivers, something he predicted to Paige before the season.

"He laughs and jokes with me all the time," Paige said. "He stays in my ear. He told me, 'I told you so.' We both get a laugh out of it."

Paige said he has watched to see how offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe would use the wide receivers in his offense. Their success has opened Paige's eyes.

"During the season I was like, 'Tennessee had a bad year last year - a real bad year,' " he said. "This year is kind of like the complete opposite. I didn't realize the offense was that spread out like that. I was really surprised by the offense."

While UT has returned to success, Florida State (4-4, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) has gone into despair. The Seminoles are last in the ACC's Atlantic Division.

Paige said he's concerned by the struggles of the proud program he committed to in September.

"They're really close on my radar," he said. "I thought they were going to have a banging year this year when they beat Miami (on Sept. 4). It's kind of like since Miami it's been down hill from there. In a sense it's kind of disappointing."

Paige said he expects coaching changes among the Seminoles' staff, but he'll wait to see what happens.

"If there's a defensive change it wouldn't really affect me that much," he said. "But if it was kind of an offensive change, like a receivers coach or (offensive coordinator) Jeff Bowden, it'd make a huge difference."

Paige could make a difference for UT next season. Receivers Jayson Swain and Bret Smith are seniors, and Robert Meachem could skip his senior year to enter the NFL draft.

Paige said early playing time will be as factor in his decision.

"Definitely you want that opportunity," he said.

After his trip to UT, Paige said he will visit Florida State, Florida and Southern Cal.

Paige said he will use the visits to make sure his commitment to Florida State was the right decision.

"It's kind of shaky in a sense," he said about taking visits while committed. "Florida State really doesn't like it that much, but it's making me more comfortable in what I'm doing in my commitment."
