Receiver Toliver calls Vols to schedule visit

Tennessee’s offense has made a good impression on Terrance Toliver.

Toliver, a wide receiver from Hempstead (Texas) High School, will take an official visit to UT this weekend. He said he decided last week to make the trip.

"I was just sitting at home bored thinking about some stuff," he said. "Then I just thought about Tennessee. I turned (the television) to SportsCenter and saw Tennessee’s head coach (Phillip Fulmer) on there, and I just decided to call."

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Toliver said he watched UT’s 31-24 win at South Carolina last Saturday. He said he was impressed with the way UT’s offense used its receivers.

"I saw them throwing it to (Robert) Meachem a lot," he said. "They throw the ball around."

Toliver said he’s noticed the fan support UT receives and wants to see it in person at Neyland Stadium.

"I know Tennessee has over 100,000 fans," he said. "I wanted to see what they’re like. I’ve never seen a 100,000-seat stadium anyway. I just want to see how it looks, and the atmosphere."

Toliver said he sees an opportunity at UT to play as a freshman, which will be an important factor in his decision.

"Meachem, he’s a junior," Toliver said, "and they have two more receivers (Jayson Swain and Bret Smith) leaving this year. I have a good chance to start.

"That’s very important. That’s what I want to do — start as a freshman anyway."

Toliver not only wants to start as a freshman — he expects to.

"I always feel confident about my ability," he said. "I know I can play for anybody, anywhere."

Hempstead coach Ricky Sargent believes his star receiver can play for anybody as well. He’d be surprised otherwise.

"He’ll work hard to make sure he plays," Sargent said. "He’ll be disappointed and I will too if he doesn’t play. He’s that special kind of athlete."

Toliver is also considering LSU, Florida, Oklahoma and Southern Cal. He has already taken an official visit to Oklahoma and will visit the remaining schools after this weekend.

He said he might announce his decision on Jan. 6. That’s when he will play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Toliver said the opportunity to play in the game will be a dream come true.

"It’s what I’ve been dreaming about since I’ve been in high school and I started watching it," he said. "I was like, ‘Man, I wish I could play in that game one day.’ And here I am."

While the news of the selection was exciting, it wasn’t surprising.

"I knew I was going to be in it all along," he said. "I was happy to tell you the truth. I was just happy and proud of myself."

Toliver said he uses his confidence to give him an edge on the field. It’s something he learned from his favorite NFL receiver.

"Every game I go out I’m unstoppable," he said. "I just put that in my head and just leave it there. Nobody can stop me. I’m like T.O. (Terrell Owens)."
