Surprise recruits offset no-shows

Like a college class schedule, Tennessee’s official visit list underwent some last-minute changes.

First, there were the drops. Neither quarterback/athlete Travaris Cadet from Miami (Fla.) Central High School nor athlete Demarcus VanDyke from Pace High in Miami made the trip.

Then, there were the additions: athlete Armando Allen from Miami Lakes High in Hialeah, Fla. and athlete Marquis Maze from Tarrant High in Birmingham, Ala.

Despite all the changes, UT still hosted eight official visitors this weekend, most of whom were highly ranked.

It was the last chance this season for the Vols to sell their big-game atmosphere to prospects. UT’s lone remaining home game is against Kentucky on Nov. 25.

The approach seemed to work, especially with Terrance Toliver, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound wide receiver from Hempstead (Texas) High, who is considering LSU, Florida, Southern Cal and Oklahoma.

"It’s something I’ve never seen before," Toliver told GoVolsXtra.com. "There’s over 100,000 people screaming. They’re crazy fans. I loved the stadium."

Running Recruit: UT commitment Daryl Vereen from North Mecklenburg in Huntersville, N.C., rushed for 268 yards, including touchdown runs of 76, 29 and 27 yards, to defeat rival Hopewell and win its conference.

The week before he rushed for a career-high 320 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries in a 45-28 victory against Concord Robinson. His scoring runs were 73, 63 and 2 yards.
