Fulmer says he read report

Correction leading to this story: In a story this week, it was erroneously reported that Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer would not comment Wednesday about reports he had not viewed an arrest report before doling penalties for three players involved in a bar brawl early Sunday morning. Fulmer was not asked about the situation Wednesday and therefore could not be expected to comment.

Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer said Thursday he had read a police report before punishing three players arrested after a brawl early Sunday morning at GoodFellas Sports Bar and Grill.

Fulmer took issue with a statement in Thursday's News Sentinel attributed to Jimmy Hyams, Sports Animal radio show sports director. The statement read that Fulmer told Hyams on Tuesday that he had not seen the police report. On Thursday, Fulmer said Hyams' statement likely was due to a miscommunication.

"Getting the police report was one of the first things I did," Fulmer said Thursday. "I also talked to 30 or so players. I always gather all of the information I can in situations like this before making a decision."

The players -- tailback Arian Foster, fullback David Holbert and safety Antonio Wardlow -- were given suspensions ranging from half of a game to two games after their arrests early Sunday morning.

Fulmer also acknowledged that Gerald Harrison, director of high school relations on the football staff, was present at GoodFellas when the altercations occurred. He said it is standard practice to have a staff member in attendance for such social gatherings.
