Cajuns rely on dead-eye duet
Mouton, Dees should give UT fit in hostile Cajundome atmosphere
Fortunately for the Vols (4-2), the Ragin' Cajuns' (1-3) duet they're facing at 8 p.m. (TV: Fox Sports Net) is nothing like the North Carolina tandem the Vols dealt with in New York.
Unlike Tar Heels giants Tyler Hansbrough and Brandan Wright, Louisiana-Lafayette guards David Dees and Ross Mouton score from the perimeter.
And score often.
Mouton (6-foot-7) and Dees (6-3) are averaging 20.5 and 22.8 points a game, respectively, for this Sun Belt Conference school. That accounts for 64.1-percent of the Ragin' Cajuns points this season.
"We're going to have our hands full with those two guys,'' UT associate head coach Tony Jones said. "Chris (Lofton) and JaJuan (Smith) will need to do a real good job.''
That said, Vols' head coach Bruce Pearl said he'll wait a while before sticking Lofton and Smith on the scorers.
"I have to wait, because I don't need either one of those guys in foul trouble,'' Pearl said. "Those guys are great players and scorers.''
Another indicator of the skills possessed by Mouton and Dees is their rebounding: Dees leads the team with eight rebounds per game while Mouton is pulling down 5.8.
Pearl said the Vols have more than just two great players on their hands; the Cajundome is renowned for being a difficult place to play.
Cal State Fullerton's 91-89 win in Lafayette on Friday night snapped the Cajuns 17-game non-conference home win streak.
"It's a huge, loud place with great history,'' Pearl said. "You know, they were the ones that wanted this game -- they called us with the 2-for-1 offer.''
The Vols won last year's contest, 83-76, in Knoxville, but not until after Louisiana-Lafayette erased a 21-point lead to take a one-point lead with five minutes left.
Pearl said the Ragin' Cajuns are just as dangerous this season despite their record.
"They had a shot to beat Oral Roberts (54-51), which was the team that beat Kansas,'' Pearl said. "They are a good team that has played a tough schedule, they just haven't found a way to win.
"You'll see they are very physical and set great screens for their two scorers, so they could take advantage of us in the half court.''
Pearl said he'll turn loose the press with hopes of increasing the tempo.
"That would be to our advantage,'' he said. "Defensively, we've got to use intensity to make up for what we lack in our experience. The effort has to be there because we lack knowledge.
"We're not seeing the plays before they happen; we react instead of dictating.''
Worth Noting: Tonight's game is the Vols' fifth away from Thompson-Boling Arena this season. ... Louisiana-Lafayette outrebounded UT 50-32 in last year's meeting. ... UT's 15 converted 3-pointers against North Carolina were one short of tying the school record. ... Freshman Wayne Chism leads the Vols with 6.8 rebounds per game and averages 8.7 points per outing.
