Vols trying to add Langley's teammate

Tennessee's recruiting efforts at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown, Md., didn't stop when defensive tackle Donald Langley committed to the Vols on Nov. 6.

UT is actively recruiting Langley's teammate Jourdon Brooks, who said the Vols lead Rutgers, Syracuse and Illinois for his services.

Brooks, a 6-foot, 240-pound running back/linebacker, said Langley has become another recruiter for UT.

"It plays a little bit of a factor that I could go to school with a friend of mine," Brooks said. "He's talked to me about it. He tells me a lot about the coaches and how the players interacted with him when he went on his official visit (in September)."

Brooks said all four schools he's considering are recruiting him to play running back. He said UT's coaches would like to add his style of power to their running game.

"They probably think that I'm a good inside runner in between the tackles," he said. "Plus I could probably dive in there for a couple yards into the end zone.

"I think it would help me a lot because there's a lot of -- I wouldn't say small corners -- but they're not all that big, and I think I could break a couple of tackles, especially during the goal line when we're going in between the tackles."

Brooks said UT coach Phillip Fulmer compared his combination of size and speed to that of former UT running back Jamal Lewis. Brooks said he was taken aback by the comparison to the Baltimore Ravens star.

"It made me feel really good that an actual head coach, especially coach Fulmer with a national championship and everything, compared me to one of the league's best running backs that he's ever coached," he said.

Brooks said he plans to take an official visit to UT some time in December. He took an unofficial visit to UT on Nov. 4 when the Vols lost to LSU 28-24.

"How the fans treated their players after every play," he said about what stood out during the game. "Even though they were losing the fans were still rooting them on."

Brooks said the opportunity to play in the SEC will be another factor in his decision.

"I would love to go down South because that's where all the good schools are right now," he said.

Brooks took an official visit to Syracuse in September, and he said he will visit Illinois in December and Rutgers on Jan. 19.

He said the recent success by Rutgers is a big draw to the Scarlet Knights.

"They've shown me a lot from coming up from nothing all the way to be a nationally ranked team in the top 10 in the nation," he said.

While each school is recruiting Brooks as a running back, he said linebacker could be a possibility if offense doesn't work.

"Running back is my first shot," he said, "but I'd consider anything in college as long as I'm playing."
