Mayo defensive player of week

Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo, who led the Vols with 12 tackles against Alabama, was named SEC defensive player of the week.

Mayo also had a sack on the final play of the 16-13 victory as the Vols’ defense held the Tide to 211 yards of total offense.

LSU receiver Dwayne Bowe won the offense award, and Arkansas return man Felix Jones the special teams honor.

Bowe caught four passes for 106 yards and a touchdown in LSU’s 38-6 win over Fresno State. He tied an LSU record for career TD receptions at 21 with his 58-yard scoring reception early in the fourth quarter. He also became only the sixth LSU receiver to go over the 2,000-yard mark.

Jones returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in Arkansas’ 38-3 win against Mississippi to earn special teams honors.

It was his second 100-yard kickoff return for the Razorbacks, joining former Rebels’ player John Avery as the only SEC players to manage that feat.

The offensive lineman of the week was Auburn tackle King Dunlap while defensive line honors went to South Carolina end Casper Brinkley.

Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford was the freshman of the week.
