Whirlwind arrival at UT whets Smith’s appetite

Tennessee freshman guard Ramar Smith is wasting no time fitting in with the Vols.

Smith, the prized recruit out of Detroit whose enrollment was held up throughout the summer while his SAT test score was being validated, has been on the move since starting classes at UT on Aug. 31.

Smith was allowed to speak with the media for the first time Wednesday.

"I got the (test) news, drove down, and got here around 10 a.m.,’’ said Smith, who sped through the night to get his schedule, ID and start classes within 24 hours of getting cleared. "It was hectic the first few days, but this has been everything I expected and even better.’’

Likewise for Smith, who has wasted no time wowing his teammates with his quickness and scoring prowess.

"Ramar is the real deal,’’ junior JaJuan Smith said. "He’s as good as they say. Better.’’

Smith, 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, figures to bring instant excitement to the court.

Not only can he score — from virtually all over — but his ability to penetrate will have Smith and Chris Lofton licking their chops at the prospect of wide-open 3-pointers.

"I was really just a scoring guard in high school,’’ said Smith, who originally committed to Connecticut. "I wasn’t really looking on the wing or for big men.

"Now, when I draw the double team, I’ll kick it to the wing, and I know that JaJuan or Chris will knock it down.’’

Smith’s quick hands make him a strong defender.

Lofton, Jordan Howell, Dane Bradshaw and JaJuan Smith all been stripped of the ball by Smith.

Smith said he just needs to get stronger.

"A lot of the guys are stronger right now,’’ he said. "But I’m getting in the process of lifting and running.’’

And on weekends, Smith is getting himself acclimated with Tennessee tradition.

"I’ve been to the first two football games and loved them,’’ Smith said. "I wish I could go to every game.’’

Alas, the Vols play football on the road, and Smith has a basketball season to get ready for, presumably at point guard.

"There’s a lot of energy with the freshmen, and we have some great upperclassmen,’’ Smith said. "I think we have a chance to fight for the national championship.’’

Smith knows he could be putting even more pressure on himself by making his high aspirations public, but he doesn’t mind.

"It’s good pressure,’’ Smith said. "There’s never bad pressure, because I love pressure.’’

Smith said fellow freshman Marques Johnson — a versatile 6-6 Indiana product — puts pressure on him every day when they compete.

"That competition motivates me and pushes me every day,’’ Smith said. "If I start, I start. If I don’t, I don’t. It’s whatever helps the team.

"I think Marques and I are a great combination right now.’’

It appears that Tennessee and Ramar Smith are a great combination, too.

"I’m just enjoying everything,’’ Smith said. "Open gyms, running hills and lifting weights. It’s going really well.’’
