There's the Florida rivalry. There are more than 106,000 in the stands. There's a bounce-back team amidst all the facilities that UT annually offers.
Then, there's the triple commitment: Justin Harrell.
Not only did Harrell commit to UT in 2002 out of Westview High School in Martin, Tenn., he's shown his dedication on two other occasions.
First, Harrell spurned the NFL draft to return for his senior year only to suffer a torn biceps last week against Air Force during the second game of the season. Harrell, however, wasn't done.
The defensive tackle showed his passion for the Vols once again when he postponed surgery to his arm until next week in order to play one more game against rival Florida.
His UT career will be over despite his best efforts to postpone its finality.
UT's coaches and recruiting staff surely won't let this one slide by. Every prospect who steps on campus this weekend should know Harrell's story by heart.
How about a Harrell senior day? Hold the pre-game 'T' open just for the player that has shown so much passion for his teammates and coaches.
Imagine the crowd support.
Imagine the impact that would have on UT's visitors.
Who wouldn't want that type of love?
Game Plan: The Vols won't be hosting many official visitors on game weeks this year because of logistic issues.
It's hard for players to enjoy a visit when they have to play a high school game on Friday night. It's hard for UT's coaches to be focused on prospects when an SEC opponent is at hand and recruiting trips must be made on Friday night.
If a prospect is visiting on a game weekend, especially Florida, you can bet that he's good and he's from lands afar. This is when UT's coaches pull out the big guns for prospects who would have never visited Knoxville had UT not recruited them.
After all, how do you describe Neyland Stadium over the phone?
Official visitors lined up for this weekend:
- Donald Langley: He isn't exactly a household name in UT recruiting circles. That could change depending on his official visit. The 6-foot-2, 265-pound defensive tackle is considering several schools.
UT has yet to land a defensive lineman. You can bet that will be a top priority right up until February.
- Kristofer O'Dowd: He is from Salpointe Catholic School in Tucson, Ariz. The 6-5, 315-pounder would be a good pickup for a class that's light on offensive linemen. Darris Sawtelle from Brother Rice in Birmingham, Mich., is UT's only committed lineman.
O'Dowd is considering several school including Miami, Southern Cal and Penn State.
- Matt Romine: He has visited Knoxville but never during a UT game. The fact that he wants to come back is encouraging. The 6-6, 285-pound offensive tackle from Union High in Tulsa, Okla., is considering several SEC schools. Miami has also been discussed.
UT has a good tie to Romine. Former high school teammate Chase Nelson is a freshman defensive tackle at UT.
Unofficial Visitors: The Vols will host several unofficial visitors this weekend. Chris Donald from Huntingdon is one of the headliners.
Donald visited Knoxville last weekend for the Air Force game with several friends. His immediate return trip this week has to have UT's recruiters feeling confident.
Donald said he is still leaning toward committing to UT despite a visit last month to Notre Dame.
Wowed: Gerald Jones is still amazed. The 6-0, 185-pound athlete from Millwood High in Oklahoma City watched UT beat California 35-18 on Sept. 2 and came away very impressed.
"I saw the atmosphere on TV with the fans," Jones told GoVolsXtra.com. "I want to be a part of that as far as seeing what's going.
"I know Tennessee has a great tradition of winning. Hopefully I can find out the rest I want to know when I go there."
Jones' comments must make UT's recruiters feel good about their chances. The next step is locking up an official visit from a prospect who has the nation's elite drooling.
UT coach Phillip Fulmer might not have known it, but he was recruiting Jones during the Cal game. Fulmer was as animated as any time in recent memory.
"The excitement they play with is amazing," he said. "I like the style of the offense. It seems like the coaches were pumping them up whether they did good or bad."
