Wynn ups his stock with Florida coach

When former Florida running back Errict Rhett spoke to the Gators this offseason, leaving an impression on one current tailback.

That's when DeShawn Wynn made an interesting comment to coach Urban Meyer.

"The comment he made to me about Errict Rhett was that his 35th carry was as strong as his first," Meyer said Sunday.

That observation seemed to rub off on Wynn on a memorable Saturday night in Knoxville. Wynn rushed for 104 yards on 22 carries, keying Florida's 21-20 win over Tennessee in Neyland Stadium.

Wynn finished the game just four yards shy of his career high, set last year against Georgia, and led coach Urban Meyer to say he finally has a dependable back for the first time in his Florida coaching career.

"What's intriguing for me is we found a tailback," Meyer said. "I don't think we've had one here in the last three years at Florida."

Meyer showed his confidence in Wynn when he gave him the ball on a critical third-and-6 in the final minutes. Wynn ran for 6 yards, lunging forward for a first down which allowed Florida to run out the clock.

"That third down and six he hit at the end of the game," Meyer said, "that's the first time he's done that."

Wynn, slowed by a stinger earlier this year, had rushed for 92 yards in the No. 5 Gators' first two games.

Now Wynn will try to carry Saturday's performance into this week's game against Kentucky at The Swamp.

"If he doesn't build on (Saturday) then we got a major problem," Meyer said. "The way I evaluate DeShawn Wynn is, he's played exactly one game at the University of Florida. By a game I mean from start to finish."

Saturday was Wynn's fourth career100-yard game. Meyer said different players blossom at different times in their career.

"All great players reach that point in their life, not saying that he's a great player yet," Meyer said. "Maybe this is his time. We'll see how he practices this week and how he does this week."

Harvin's Injury Forced Shuffle: Meyer said Sunday the injury to Percy Harvin forced him and his staff to adjust their gameplan Saturday. "We had to do a lot of shuffling," Meyer said. "Some of those carries DeShawn Wynn got were going to go to Percy Harvin. CI (Cornelius Ingram) replaced him in the passing game and he obviously had a couple big plays."

Harvin suffered a high ankle sprain on the first play of the second quarter and is "officially questionable" for the Kentucky game, Meyer said.

Road Success: Meyer posted his first significant road win in the SEC, but said he was more happy for his players.

"It's a lot of satisfaction for the players who went on the road and won. We failed to do that last year," he said. "... As a team and coaching staff, we accomplished something we couldn't do a year ago. That was a great effort by our team."

Heisman Hopes: Meyer said that he would welcome any Heisman Trophy talk that may come senior quarterback Chris Leak's way.

"For our program and for Chris, I hope that does happen."
