Tucson lineman has Vols on list

Kristofer O'Dowd's fall itinerary is almost complete.

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound offensive tackle from Salpointe Catholic School in Tucson, Ariz., said he will take official visits to Southern Cal, Miami and Ohio State as he finalizes his college decision.

O'Dowd also plans to visit UCLA, but said Penn State is challenging the Bruins for the final of five NCAA-allotted official visits.

That would seem to leave the Vols in at least a final five position since O'Dowd took an official visit to Knoxville on Sept. 16 for the UT-Florida game.

"I thought it would be a lot smaller," O'Dowd said of Knoxville. "It was a really nice town, a really nice college town. The Vol Walk was pretty crazy."

The craziness of the Vol Walk didn't stop at the gate. O'Dowd was plenty impressed with 106,000-plus fans in the stands.

"It was one of a kind," he said.

O'Dowd said he was also impressed with UT's facilities and its coaches on the weekend trip.

"The coaches are all pretty cool guys," he said. "They're really straight forward with you. Three of them are offensive line guys."

O'Dowd was referring to head coach Phillip Fulmer, offensive line coach Greg Adkins and assistant offensive line coach Matt Luke, all of whom would love to land someone most consider one of the best offensive guard prospects in the nation.

"As a player, he's a complete lineman," Salpointe Catholic head coach Dennis Bene said. "He's physical. He has great feet. He knows how to finish blocks. He's played lights out so far this year for us.

"He can slam dunk a basketball. He's extremely athletic. He's been able to dominate a lot of kids. He should do well at the next level."

Bene should know. He's coached several players who went on to Division-I success.

"Chris is by far the best high school football player I've ever coached," Bene said.

O'Dowd said all five hosts of his final official visits will be on equal footing once he resolves the Penn State-UCLA debate. The good news for fans of all of those schools is that O'Dowd seems intent to leave Arizona and willing to leave the region.

"There's really no distance factor with me," he said. "Everyone has there own pros and cons."

O'Dowd said he plans to announce a decision shortly before National Signing Day in February.

Here's something for UT fans to hope for. O'Dowd said a return trip to Knoxville is possible. Considering he would have to procure his own travel, that would show some serious consideration toward continuing his football career as a Vol.
