Former UT signee Tyler Smith arrested
Smith, a freshman at the University of Iowa, and senior teammate Mike Henderson were charged with theft at a shopping mall.
The alleged incident occurred Sunday at a Dillard's department store, according to The Daily Iowan newspaper. No further details were available.
Smith, from Pulaski, Tenn., signed with the Vols in November 2004 but decided not to attend UT after coach Buzz Peterson was fired. The 6-foot-7 forward instead played last season at Hargrave Military Academy.
"We feel terrible that we made such a stupid mistake,'' Smith and Henderson said in a joint release. "There is no excuse for our actions, and we take full responsibility.''
Iowa coach Steve Alford also issued a statement: "Mike and Tyler are good individuals who made a very poor decision and I am very disappointed with their actions.
"They will meet all of the legal requirements toward restitution, along with the consequences within the basketball program.''
