Strange: Each Lady Vol left her mark
Everyone on this Tennessee team had at least one shining moment and most had a bunch of them.
Here's a look back over the season, singling out some critical junctures when various Lady Vols stood and delivered.
Candace Parker
With 23 double-doubles, how do you single out one shining moment for
the Wade Trophy winner? Maybe by considering the opponent. Parker was
at the top of her game on Jan. 6 when the Lady Vols stopped previously
unbeaten Connecticut 70-64 before 16,294 in Hartford. She put up 30
points and 12 rebounds and become the first player ever to dunk against
the Huskies. "It's kind of like when we had Diana (Taurasi),"' said
UConn coach Geno Auriemma. "What's the answer?'"
Nicky Anosike
What a Final Four! Cleveland was no place for finesse and Anosike was
the Lady Vols' blue-collar heroine. She dominated the paint in the
championship win over Rutgers with 16 rebounds. Consider her box score
against North Carolina in the semis: 14 points, seven rebounds, five
steals, four blocked shots, three assists. She was also clutch at the
free-throw line, going 8-for-12.
Alexis Hornbuckle
With a year still to play, Hornbuckle is already in elite company,
joining Chamique Holdsclaw and Tamika Catchings as the only Lady Vols
with 800 points, 450 rebounds, 300 assists, 225 steals and 45 blocks.
Ironically, two of her best games in 2006-07 were in defeat. She
matched a career-high with 19 points in a 74-70 loss to Duke, then went
off for 29 points in the SEC-tourney loss to LSU.
Sidney Spencer
A trip to No. 15-Vanderbilt on Jan. 25 was going to be a gut-check
following the loss to Duke. "We knew our character was going to be
determined this week," said Spencer. She showed her character with a
career-high 26 points in a hard-fought 67-57 victory. Spencer was
8-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Shannon Bobbitt
Rutgers couldn't believe the littlest Lady Vol stuck the dagger in the
title game. In one critical second-half sequence, Bobbitt hit a pair of
3-point shots and forced a turnover that Hornbuckle converted. No one
took more advantage of defenses collapsing on Parker in the tournament
than Bobbitt. In UT's six NCAA tournament wins she was 15-of-31 beyond
the 3-point arc.
Alberta Auguste
The junior-college transfer played the game of her career when it
mattered most, in the banner-clinching victory over Rutgers. Auguste
burned Rutgers with 10 points and five rebounds. She scored eight
points in a stellar first-half segment to help the Lady Vols overcome a
stagnant offense and creep out to a 29-18 halftime lead.
Alex Fuller
The sophomore had to be helped off the court on Jan. 18 after a 73-44
win over Mississippi State, but for good reason. With Parker under the
weather, Fuller got her only start and played a career-high 36 minutes.
She contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three
steals.
Dominique Redding
The senior forward had plenty of longer stretches on the court but none
so effective as the eight minutes she played at LSU on Feb. 19. With
Spencer struggling, Redding came off the bench blazing, with three big
baskets, two of them treys. Redding's eight points helped nip an LSU
rally and allowed the Lady Vols to clinch the SEC regular-season title
with a 56-51 win.
Cait McMahan
When Bobbitt had to stay home to take an exam, McMahan made her first
and only start at Louisiana Tech on Nov. 28. The Lady Vols cruised,
71-50 with McMahan playing 24 minutes, scoring seven points on 3-of-6
shooting. She recorded four rebounds, three assists and zero
turnovers.
