UT board projecting a surplus

Donations keep rolling in and projects keep going up around the University of Tennessee Athletic Department.

Healthy financial news and continuing improvements being made to facilities became the theme of the UT Athletics Board spring meeting on Saturday.

The board was informed a surplus of $900,000 was projected for the 2006-07 sports year, based on a budget of $73.4 million.

Donations to the Volunteer Athletics Scholarship Fund are on pace to meet a $17.1 million goal this year.

Men's basketball, on its way to a Sweet 16 showing in the NCAA tournament, continued to pull its weight on the financial side of things.

A number of capital improvement projects for facilities are underway, nearing completion or in the planning phase.

* Thompson-Boling Arena -- Renovations got underway March 13 and are scheduled for completion by Oct. 15. The 32 suites and 140 new loge seats are sold out and to provide a net revenue increase of $1.7 million to fund up to $20 million in renovations.

The Pratt Pavillion Basketball Practice Facility also is scheduled for completion in October.
