The Crimson Tide offered the 6foot, 195-pound receiver from Alcoa High School a scholarship last week. Then, came Alabama's spring game and its well-publicized crowd of more than 92,000 last Saturday.
"The turnout for the spring game was just amazing," Sommer said. "You always take notice of that. Just shows how big football is down there. That showed me a lot about Alabama."
Sommer took notice of Alabama's spring game from a time zone away, while he was participating in a Nike camp on Georgia's campus in Athens.
"I thought it was a great camp," Sommer said. "It was a high level of competition down there. It was some of the best players in the South. It was the best competition I'll probably see all year."
Sommer admitted a sore groin and hamstring slowed him, but he still believes he was grouped among the best receivers in camp.
"All it will do is just make you a better player," Sommer said. "I felt like I did pretty good."
Sommer said he's not planning on visiting any other individual camps but will visit UT's campus for a seven-on-seven passing camp in June.
Sommer has long been enamored with South Carolina. UT, Ole Miss and now Alabama are also in the hunt.
"South Carolina is ahead of everybody else," Sommer said. "It's not that I'm really leaning that way. I just have a better sense of South Carolina."
All that could soon change when Sommer lays out his official visit schedule. Sommer has never been to Alabama and visited Ole Miss once.
If a conversation with Alabama coach Nick Saban proves to be any indicator, Alabama could prove to be tough to overcome.
"He told me that they were going to be recruiting me real hard," Sommer said.
Defensive tackle coach Dan Brooks and recruiting coordinator Matt Luke are in charge of recruiting Sommer for UT.
