Southern Cal, with two national titles and a 59-6 record the past five years, opens this season with a No. 1 ranking in the USA Today Coaches’ Top 25.
Tennessee starts at No. 15.
The Trojans received 45 of the 60 first-place votes.
LSU, with four first-place votes, is No. 2 followed by Florida with nine first-place votes. Texas is No. 4, Michigan, with two first-place votes in No. 5.
West Virginia is No. 6, followed by Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and Ohio State.
Louisville is No. 11. UT’s first opponent, California, is No. 12, followed by Georgia and Auburn.
Rutgers is No. 16 followed by UCLA, Penn State, Nebraska, Arkansas, Florida State, TCU, Boise State, Hawaii and Texas A&M.
Others receiving votes: Boston College, Georgia Tech, Miami, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Missouri, Oregon State, BYU, Clemson, Oregon, South Florida, Texas Tech, Alabama, Oklahoma State, Southern Mississippi, Iowa, Kansas State, Memphis, Houston, Arizona, Duke, Kentucky, Washington State.
