Magnuson qualifies for U.S. team

Christine Magnuson’s third-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly Thursday at the national championships in Indianapolis earned the rising University of Tennessee senior a spot on the U.S. National Team for an international meet later this month.

Magnuson’s time of 58.76 seconds was the 13th fastest in the world (eighth in the country) and she shaved 1.01 seconds off her previous lifetime best of 59.77.

Magnuson will head to in Chiba, Japan, for the Japan International Grand Prix, Aug. 21-24. One of the criteria for qualification is a faster time than sixth place in the event at last year’s nationals. The time for Magnuson to beat was 1:00.22.

Magnuson has now qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Former Lady Vol Jacque Fessel finished 22nd in the 100 fly with an Olympic Trial time of 1:01.36. She qualified for the “C” final after placing 22nd in the prelims in 1:01.14.
