NITRA, Slovakia — BK Nitra turned the heat up on the Tennessee men’s basketball team Tuesday night.
But the Vols, thanks to the Pilot Rocky Top League and summer workouts at Stokely Arena, withstood the test en route to a 109-92 victory at the Slovenska Pol’nohospodarska Universizita.
“Playing in that league and practicing in Stokely really helped us beat the heat tonight,’’ said senior wing JaJuan Smith. “In some ways, tonight was worse because the drinks weren’t cold.’’
UT trainer Chad Newman said that if he hadn’t brought the Vols’ bottled water, they would have been forced to drink the carbonated version supplied by the Europeans.
Ryan Childress led Vols’ scorers with 19 points and preseason All-American Chris Lofton scored 17 to pace six UT players in double figures as they improved to 3-0 on the tour.
BK Nitra is one of two college teams that plays in the Slovakian Professional League, last year finishing fifth out of the 10 teams. The team features at least four Slovakian national players, and was directed by the Slovakian national coach.
Tennessee hit its first three shots to race out to a 6-0 lead on the orange-and-black clad university team, and went up 18-6 when Duke Crews split a pair of free throws with 5:56 left.
But Nitra, with a gym full of rowdy fans, battled back to tie the game 28-28 with 9:48 left when Nitro native Palemik Miroslav hit a pair of free throws.
“Oh man, that was a great experience to play a team like that,’’ said Miroslav, who played at Weatherford Community College in Texas last season and is headed to Niagara on a scholarship this season. “I’m sorry we’re not in the best of shape. We’ve had two weeks of practice, and we’ve spent three weeks running.’’
The Vols, pressed by an opponent for the first time since arriving in Europe on Friday, responded to the tie score with some running of their own.
Steven Pearl scored on a three-point play and Crews and Wayne Chism each sank a pair of free throws for a 7-0 run.
A Jordan Howell steal led to a JaJuan Smith trey that closed the first half and gave Tennessee a 59-42 lead.
Vols’ point guard Ramar Smith, originally not expected to play after having his sprained thumb bandaged heavily the previous two days, scored 11 of his 16 points by halftime.
“We took the wrap off and the swelling was down and the (discoloration) was gone, so I went,’’ Ramar Smith said.
BK Nitra rallied in the second half to cut Tennessee’s lead to 77-69 with 34 seconds left in the third quarter with one of its nine 3-pointers, but Josh Tabb answered with a successful drive and ensuing free throw to push the lead into double digits for the remainder of the game.
“We continue to struggle with our man-to-man drop-back defense, and it’s not getting any better,’’ UT coach Bruce Pearl said. “Give that team two Americans with breakdown ability, and you would have an even game.
“This is what I expected when we came over here.’’
Pearl praised Childress for his consistency and JaJuan Smith for his defensive intensity, and he continues to be pleased with his son, Steven.
“Steven is our ninth man over here, and when he comes in there is no drop off,’’ Pearl said. “He belongs out there.’’
Even with all of his improvement, it’s likely Steven Pearl will fall from the rotation as transfers J.P. Prince and Tyler Smith join the team in addition to incoming freshmen Cameron Tatum and Brian Williams.
“I’m having fun right now, and that’s all that matters,’’ Steven Pearl said. “I just want to win.’’

All the players aren't there. We will see Smith and Prince later. Is Tabb maxing out? I see Childress pushing hard. Let us say more accurately he will push them to be their best. When the season is in flow we will know....who is overachieving.Subpar opponemts til this last one. Again I ask are they through or more games in Europe?

I find it hard to believe that Lofton is playing this well. I thought Jay Wright and company had just recently determined that he wasn't good enough for the international game. I guess he's just hitting some lucky shots or something.:-\

I am possibly the least politically correct person around, CRVol, but there is no need to be antagonistic toward those who politely objected to your post about Coach Pearl's divine status by reposting your comment, which some consider blasphemous, not once but twice. My question you is: Will Coach Pearl still be a God <sic> in your eyes when the team he coaches suffers a losing season, the REAL God forbid?

Guys let's keep our heads on straight...remember the Titanic! Now on to basketball! Pearl is a wizard for sure at getting the most out of his players and I am SO GLAD he is OUR coach! I look forward one day to hearing Earnie and Bernie stating "...I wish we could have done what our new players are doing today..." The dream lives on and GO VOLS!!!

FatherVol and seven_pin I don't think CRVol and jwraymond1 were trying to offend you. I think they are just a little excited. Sometimes we say stuff we really don't mean. Like when I got excited and started comparing Coach Pearl to the likes of all the great Coaches: John Wooden, Dean Smith, Adulf Rupp, Pat Summitt, Coach K., Roy Williams, & Bob Knight. I think you get the picture. Yes, I got a little excited and ahead of myself. We have to control our feelings (like a JEDI Knight-Ha, Ha) and simply get behind Coach Pearl and his players. We don't expect 39-0, but we know they will be at least 16-14. Now cut that in half 23-7, that's what I feel like we will get. All I won't is to year in and year out compete with the likes of KY and FL for the SEC East title. If we do that we will also be competing for the whole SEC Championship. If we are competing for the SEC Championship we will also be in the possible hunt for a NCAA Championship. The ultimate College Basketball goal. Do I think we can do that this year-maybe not. However, I've seen stanger things happen. I believe in Bruce Pearl. We got the real deal when we got him. He's not only a great Coach & motivator, but also a great Teacher in life's lessons that all these young men need. Now let us just seat back and enjoy some exciting basketball this season and for seasons to come. GO VOLS!

What's up with Childress?! He is really play great sounds like. He has got a great attitude and plays hard. Sounds like Steven Pearl is playing good too. It's nice to know that we have more then 10 players that we could probally play and not have a big let down. Now that was the kind of game I expected over there. So far I'm real impresssed with how the Big Orange are playing. Keep up the good work. Keep working on your weaknesses. I cann't wait to see them play in pearson this year. I'm going to try to go to all the FRI, Sat, & SUN games we have and watch all the TUES, WED, THURS games on TV or listen to them on the radio. GO VOLS!

Hasn't everyone learned yet to ignore JW and CR? They are both loud mouths that just trying to antagonize everyone. That's a FACT.
BOASoldier writes:
alright CR they don't think that you were saying you think he is really a God they were saying it should not be capitalized and then by you writing God again it just antagonized them. false gods are written about in the Bible but it is only capitalized when speaking of the one and only God... that is all anyone was saying ... taken too far I agree but that is the case they are presenting against you... no capitilization of god for Pearl... ie. he is a god. get it, got it, good.

CRVol, I was not offended by your comment. I have used the same phrase myself in reference to other mortals when they have done something outstanding, even if I refrained from the upper case "G." I knew what you were saying. My post was more about continuing to antagonize those who objected to your praseology by reposting. But, I must admit that you heated up the board today! I don't give pimp slaps and I'm too northern European to give a stanger a hug, but I do extend my hand to you in Volunteer comraderie.
