Steven Fowlkes was ready to buck a recruiting trend, and Tennessee was more than happy to oblige.
The standout from Banneker High School in College Park, Ga., committed to play football for the Vols, on Wednesday in part, because he was offered a chance to play wide receiver.
Fowlkes is the eighth commitment of UT’s 2008 signing class.
At 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, many colleges projected Fowlkes as a quick, long-armed defensive end instead of an offensive player.
North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Indiana, Purdue and Central Florida were some of the schools that tried to convince Fowlkes to play defense. Not Tennessee.
Fowlkes visited UT last weekend and decided Knoxville was where he wanted to continue his career.
“They (the Vols) are going to give me an opportunity to play it (receiver),” Fowlkes told the News Sentinel on Monday. “I want to take advantage of the opportunity.”
Fowlkes began playing football in 2006, and even then his career was sidelined for five games as he battled elbow bursitis.
Fowlkes’ lack of football experience caused some confusion as to which position he should play. Still, his athletic ability helped him become a highly sought after athlete.

There's that troubling word "athleticism" again. I am still rying to figure how it fits into the philosophical realm of the other "-isms," e.g., communism, capitalism, fascism, idealism, cubism, etc.

He'd be a tall wr, just throw him one of those high lob passes ... what're those called, FatherVol? ;)

Athleticism....hmm. We seem to have looked for a lot of those types of players. Isn't Vinson one of those players....and I don't think I've heard one thing about him so far this year.
Best of wishes for the Vols.

Yeah... this one mystifies me. If UT were pursuing him for a DE like everyone else then it would make sense. But they're projecting him as
a WR. Rivals has a 4.65 40 for him... that's barely faster than Eric Young... though to be fair Yound is incredibly fast for an OL.

When David Martin played here I believe we called him a wide receiver (and he was OK for us but not great as I recall), but he made it to the nfl and they said, dude, your're a tight end! Maybe Fowlkes said, just let me try it and we said OK. Who knows how things might shake out.

C'mon folks, use your heads. Jason Witten signed with the Vols because UT told him he could play DE.

I would say the athleticism is part of realism. Or maybe part of an organism.
