Tigers sign Iorg
Cale Iorg isn’t going to Alabama, Tennessee or Arizona State.
The 21-year-old shortstop is headed to a career in professional baseball.
The former Karns High School standout signed with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday for a reported $1.4975 million contract.
Iorg was a sixth-round draft pick in June and the contract would be a record for that round, according to Baseball America.
He was assigned to the Tigers’ rookie team in Lakeland, Fla., in the Gulf Coast League.
Iorg, the son of former Toronto Blue Jays infielder Garth Iorg, spent the last two years away from baseball on a Mormon mission in Portugal.
A workout session helped convince the Tigers he was worth the investment.
He hit .280 with 11 doubles, five home runs, 38 RBIs and 15 stolen bases as a freshman shortstop at Alabama in 2005, but had transferred to Arizona State to play this coming season if he didn’t sign.
